Parksville Taekwondo is hosting the Vancouver Island Taekwondo Championships on May 11, 2013. The deadline for registration is May 6th. This smaller, Island-based tournament might be a great way to dip your toe into competing without making the epic trek to Vancouver. If you or your son/daughter is a black strap or a pretest black belt, and have not competed before, you must compete in this tournament as a requirement for your Black Belt. For comments, questions or extenuating circumstances, contact Sabumnims Richard Dobbs or Anne Koke.
To register, or for more information, visit the Parksville Taekwondo Website, and click on “2013 VITC”. There is a form online that you can print out.
We strongly encourage everyone to try competing at some point. In addition to the obvious benefits of putting your taekwondo skills into practice, it can be an incredibly empowering experience:
“When I competed for the first time, I chose to compete in poomsae (forms) only. When my name was called, I stood up, bowed and approached the centre of the mat. I needed to feel and see that tattoo on my back more than ever – Indomitable Spirit. I had those Korean characters blazoned on my back in black ink, there to remind me that the only person capable of dominating my spirit was myself. There before me sat three judges with scoring cards. My whole world narrowed to a pinpoint and all I could see was the folded over number sheets that sat in the lap of each judge. My knees were knocking and my stomach was making butter, but I had practiced and practiced for this moment. My body began to go through the well rehearsed moves and before I knew it; I was at the end and bowing. I don’t remember what my score was, but I earned a silver medal and got to stand on a podium for the first time in my entire 37 years. THAT was empowering.” – Katrina Cain
Don’t forget that you can attend as a spectator as well. If you or your kids would like to see how a tournament works, and/or would like to support your fellow club members, come down on May 11 to see what it is all about.
We would love to publish testimonials from students in our club. If you have a personal experience that you would like to share, talk to Subumnims Richard or Anne. We also encourage photo submissions. In order for them to go on our website, they need to be in j-peg format, in a nice clear resolution with accompanying permission if there is anyone but yourself or your own child in the photo.
Saturday training will begin in April for those wanting to compete at the Vancouver Island Taekwondo Championships. This training is open to any club member who wishes to improve their Sparring and Poomsae skills. Specific times and dates are to follow.
